We completed our interesting (if somewhat exhausting) trip to Namibia on April 1st 2024. We also spent some time in South Africa, and, as we had hoped, visited the tiny country of Lesotho, “The Kingdom in the Sky”. You can read posts and see some amazing photos about the places that we visited by clicking on the images below. Namibia is now off the “special cases” list in countries visited and Lesotho has been added. Despite the addition of those two countries to our list, we have still only been to 21 out of an astonishing 54 UN countries in Africa (more than any other continent). I guess that we’ll be back someday!
Our first trip of 2024 will be a return to Namibia… sort of. If you check the “List of Countries Visited” on our About Us/Countries Visited page, you’ll see that Namibia has an S” beside it whereas every other country has a “Y” for “yes”. The “S” stands for “special case”; here is the explanation for Namibia. On our first trip to southern Africa, we did a river safari from Botswana’s Chobe National Park along the Chobe River. We saw some amazing animals including some truly enormous crocodiles, but in order to see a huge herd of Cape buffalo we needed to cross to the north side of the river. And since the international border between Botswana and Namibia is defined as the centre of the river, we were technically in Namibia. Technically, but not officially, since we were never stamped into the country. We’re looking forward to making it official, setting foot on Namibian soil, and actually visiting Namibia for a few weeks. We’ll see (and maybe climb) the imaginatively named Dune 45 (pictured above), and check some of Namibia’s other iconic sights. View the Top Destinations from the Namibia Tourism Board.
Our boat trip on the Chobe was notable for another reason too (at least if you’re into quirky geographic peculiarities). We were on the Chobe just above its confluence with the Zambezi River, and within sight of the world’s only 4-country quadripoint, or perhaps just the world’s two closest tripoints. What are quadripoints and tripoints? Read our post (below) with all the details from the know-it-all ChatGPT to get the full scoop!
The trip is “Namibia and Nearby” and we’ll visit (or revisit) one or two nearby countries. South Africa for sure, since we are flying in and out of Johannesburg, and we also hope to visit Lesotho, the “Kingdom in the Sky”.
