Arrived in Windhoek late afternoon and settled into our apartment. Next morning, wandered downtown to check out the capital city’s main attractions. Spent some time at the Independence Memorial Museum. Large statue of the first president of Namibia, Sam Nujoma, prominently placed out front. Museum was poorly presented with little signage and much propaganda. Tried to see the famous, large Lutheran church, Christuskirche, across the street but it was closed. Did meet a wonderful city tour guide, Selma, beside the church. We contracted for a 1.5 hour walking tour which was fabulous. Learned alot about the Namibian people and their history. Saw the national Parliament Building and the Genocide Memorial, a monument to two tribal massacres by the Germans in 1904 and 1907. Had a tasty late lunch at the famous Joe’s Beer House then headed to the local mall to start food shopping for our upcoming 4×4 camping trip.
