We left Windhoek the morning of March 7th on our 18-day, 4×4 camping trip with every intention of posting updates and photos every few days as we usually do. However, this trip turned out to be different for a number of reasons:
- No wifi! I guess that we shouldn’t have been too surprised that cellular coverage in Namibia, the second least densely populated country in the world, was poor. Our travel SIM didn’t work at all, and our local SIM card provided spotty coverage, usually only at 3G speeds which was certainly not fast enough to upload photos.
- No time! We covered almost 3900 km in our road trip which seemed fairly reasonable, but we didn’t count on the low maximum speeds that were possible on the over 2500 km of the trip on gravel roads (or sand). Sometimes we couldn’t even manage 40 km/hour. And the set-up and cooking times when camping took extra time too.
- No power! Not all of the camp sites had power, and the inverter on our Toyota Hilux didn’t work, so we had to reserve our battery power for running lights and a little fridge.
- And just too many photos! Sorting photos is usually a pretty easy task, but Namibia is a photographer’s dream destination, with fantastic scenery and animals to photograph at every turn. Picking a reasonable number of shots for each post would take forever.
So we quickly realized that we’d have to delay our posting and photo sharing until the end of our trip. Below you’ll find a “teaser” gallery of just one good shot for each of our planned posts. More coming soon!
