A trip to four of the “‘stans” of Central Asia along the path of the fabled Silk Road. The countries that we visited, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan are all former Soviet republics and most were still ruled by Soviet-era (read Russian) politicians nearly 30 years after the collapse of the USSR. That simply added to the interest level of the trip; not only some beautiful historic sites but a look at the evolving culture of four new countries trying to find their way in the 21st century.
One of the disappointments that we faced when organizing this trip was that we weren’t able to visit Turkmenistan, an extremely difficult visa to obtain thus making Turkmenistan very high on the list of “Least Visited Countries of the World”. Happily, we did get visas to Turkmenistan a couple of years later. Posts are not yet up to date, but you can catch a preview from our Facebook post.
