Borobudur, Java, July 1, 2018 - 100countries.info

Best laid plans went astray. 8pm flight turned into 11pm flight and we didn’t get into Borobudur until about 1:30 am. Had to be up and ready to go for the sunrise at Borobudur Temple by 4am, so not much sleep. Temple was magnificent, amazing carvings on multiple tiers. Sunrise, however, was a bust. Waited for dawn for 2 hours but no sun, just clouds and mist. It was still good that we had arrived early because by 8:30am when we left the heat and crowds were intense. Went back to the hotel for breakfast then a couple of hours of catch-up sleep. Spent the afternoon biking to two more temples, Mendut and Pawon, and the Mendut Buddhist Monastery, pedaling through the nearby rice fields, and feasting on delicious roadside chicken satay. Took our arranged 46km ride to the Prawirotaman area of Yogyakarta at 4:30 then went for a late dinner.
