Happy Canada Day! Celebrating Being Canadian at Home & Abroad
Happy Canada Day

When we travel, we usually have something that shows the world that we’re Canadians. One of us frequently wears a ball cap with a Canada flag or a Canadian NHL team logo. (Yes, some of us still keep the faith that the Leafs will win another Stanley Cup despite a 58-year drought!) Canada flag luggage tags and lapel pins are a bit more subtle. Of course, most of the people in the countries that we’re visiting have no clue about the Canadian flag, so it’s really only about having the odd, random encounter with fellow Canadians on the road or carrying a little bit of pride with us as we travel.

However, once a year (if we’re at home) we break out our Canadian branded clothing and join our friends and neighbours in a sea of red in our local celebrations of Canada Day. July 1st. Celebrations are usually pretty low key, focusing on picnics, barbecues, and drinking a few beers with friends, although the evening generally ends off with a big fireworks display. Always some more great memories to carry with us in case we happen to be out of the country on July 1st. We’ve celebrated Canada Day in places as far-flung as Guatemala and Kazakhstan, but this year we were happy just to be at home!
