speedboat to Maafushi

Thursday, March 8, 2018

After an entirely forgettable night at a hotel by the airport, we were ready to experience the Maldives that we came to see. Getting from the capital city of Malé to the island of Maafushi is the first real taste of the Maldives—and it’s a memorable one. Since there are no roads connecting the islands (well,…obviously), travel is by boat, and a speedboat transfer is the quickest and most convenient option. The journey takes about 30 to 45 minutes.(There are also slower ferries available at a lower cost. There are no direct flights.)

As we left Malé behind, the views quickly shifted to the stunning blues of the Indian Ocean. Along the way, were small islands, resort atolls, and local fishing boats. Arriving in Maafushi felt like stepping into a different world. The pace is slower, the beaches are inviting, and the island has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that makes it a favourite for travellers seeking an affordable and authentic Maldives experience. Unlike the fancy resort islands with “bungalows over the water”, Maafushi is a real island where Maldivians, or Dhivehin, live.

The speedboat ride from Malé to Maafushi is quick, scenic, and the perfect introduction to island life in the Maldives.
