Crocodiles Ahead

In late September, 2023, we headed for Australia to visit family in Fremantle, Western Australia. And while we were there, we visited Denmark! Not the country but the town of Denmark, about 5 hours south of Perth, the capital of WA.

It was still early spring in Australia, so the weather was cool; we appreciated our fleece “jumpers” in the evenings (although we felt pretty silly carting those around Timor-Leste and Bali in the 30 degree weather a month later!). Still warm enough to swim (or at least get really wet and sandy) at some of the area’s spectacular beaches.

One of the highlights of the week in Denmark was the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk in the Walpole-Nornalup National Park. A 600-metre long walk on suspended walkways up to 40 metres in the air was a great way to see the giant, 400-year-old red tingle trees in the unique ecosystem of this region.

Despite the image at the top, we did not see any of Australia’s giant crocodiles in person during our month in Australia; they aren’t in WA so we had to see them in the zoo. Same for some of Australia’s other iconic fauna; the only koala bears, duck-billed platypuses, and dingoes were in the zoo or in reserves. And of course the speedy little Tasmanian devil below is only found in the state of Tasmania, so this one was videoed racing around at the Perth zoo.

We did see lots and lots of kangaroos in the wild though; they’re everywhere! Even saw a mommy kangaroo with a joey in her pouch but she bounded off without posing for a photo!

After a month of family time, countless playgrounds and ice cream cones, and seeing our grandson’s first steps, we headed home, but we took a week en route passing through Timor-Leste and Bali (and transiting Hong Kong again). Those posts are next, but check out some of our images on Flickr first.

A visit to Australia…and Denmark!
