Celebrating the first anniversary of the end of a war in Canada (a war that nobody even knew about!).
Apparently, when we were off in Australia for most of 2022, Canada quietly signed a peace treaty ending a war that had run for almost 50 years; the Whisky War (note the Canadian spelling!). Almost nobody even knew that Canada was waging an undeclared war, and most Canadians probably missed the June 14th, 2022 peace declaration (reported by the CBC or watch the YouTube video below). As a result of the Whisky War’s end, Canada now shares a land border with Europe! Denmark is the only other country other than the US with which Canada now shares a land border as a result of a roughly 50-50 split of Hans Island, smack in the middle of the 35 km strait between Canada and Greenland.
As Canadians, we are embarrassed to say that it seems that Canada was the aggressor in this war, firing the first shot by raising a flag on Hans Island and placing a bottle of whisky at the base (according to the Seeking Saudades blog). However, Canada also ended what appropriately enough has been called “history’s most polite territorial conflict” (Sandboxx) by hosting the peace treaty signing ceremony a year ago. Nice to see Canada continuing to uphold its tradition of peacekeeping by ending a war, albeit one in which no real shots were fired. (Shots of whisky and schnapps excepted!)
