coffee culture

Australians love their coffee and they don’t have Tim Hortons like we do in Canada, but mostly independent shops doing espresso based drinks. And what’s a coffee without a “slice”? Many Australian cities have a coffee street. The photos above, of three generations of our family getting their caffeine and/or sugar fix, were both taken in St. Kilda in Melbourne, but exactly 10 years apart. Note: although kids start “going out for coffee” pretty young, they get a “babyccino”. A babyccino is a cappuccino minus the espresso—in other words, frothy steamed milk. When we go to Australia next (our fall, but their spring, 2023) we won’t be in Melbourne but in Fremantle, a suburb of Perth. Fremantle is famous for its “Cappuccino Strip“.

Shameless plug! Although it’s called the Cappuccino Strip, there are all manner of bars, restaurants, and other entertainment venues along the strip. If you follow the Cappuccino Strip link you’ll see a picture of Fremantle’s iconic Federation-era ‘Evan Davies’ building on the strip with a “For Lease” sign. Not any more! Since 2019, it has been the home of Beerpourium, “Freo’s craft beer emporium”. Also our home away from home when we visit family there. Maybe we should have titled the post “Australia’s Coffee & Beer Cultures”?
