Took a pass on a long, hot hike to Khansum Yuelle Namgyel Chorten. Instead visited a nunnery nearby our hotel. Great views of the valley below. Also saw the Queens’ father drive by with his cavalcade, he lives nearby.

Drove to the capital city of Thimphu, back over the Dochula Pass. Much better weather this time but still not entirely clear.

First stop in Thimphu was the Trashichoe Dzong, Fortress of the Glorious Religion (1641). Could only go as far as the first courtyard. Royal Palace was right next door but again no pix allowed. Next stop was the Takin Preserve which houses the rather odd looking national animal of Bhutan. Kind of a cross between a cow and a goat. Quick look the crafty Kudeyling Baazam and then the local weekend Centenary Farmers’ Market. Quite organized as far as markets go but pungent. Last stop with our guide, Rinchen, was the Archery Field. Archery is the national sport so all males (and some females) participate. Hugh 135 meter range for the traditional bamboo bows. Lots of teasing and laughter during the competition and the whole team dances and sings if the target is hit.

Had a fabulous dinner at The Zone. NOT a buffet! Yak burger was delicious. Rock concert venue next door, MoJo Park served up craft beers and a live band. ACDC, Pink Floyd, CCR, Metallica and a bit of soft rock. So incongruous in such a devout, staid country.

Punaka to Thimphu
