Greek goddess Protapriliá

In May, we will visit the Mediterranean countries of Greece and Albania. While in Greece we hope to visit the small Greek island where the somewhat unusual statue pictured above was found. It is obvious that this is not a sculpture of a classic Greek beauty because she is quite overweight. (Who are we kidding; she’s fat!) That is why she is sometimes identified as Protapriliá, the patron deity of unmarried women. However there are other possible explanations:

  • The sculptor may have also been a very large person, perhaps with a bit of a fetish for plump women.
  • One wag has suggested that it’s a sculpture of his mother-in-law, not a goddess at all!

We will never know for sure…

Sadly, we cannot visit the tiny Greek island where the statue of Protapriliá was unearthed. Why not? Because there is no such island, nor is there any statue. In fact, there is no such goddess as Protapriliá. Check the date on this post and click this link for the definition of Πρωταπριλιά (Protapriliá).

As they would wish you in Greece:
